~ Plumeria ~

 Plumeria, common name Frangipani, are native to tropical and subtropical America. This small genus of 7 to 8 species has spread to all tropical areas worldwide. Plumeria grow so well in Hawaii, most people think they are indigenous to the islands. The plants growth habit is a spreading round headed form. The leather like leaves are clustered near the ends of thick, succulent like branches, exude a caustic, milky white sap when injured. The plant produces large clusters of beautiful, waxy, five petal flowers at the branch tips. Plumeria are most fragrant at night in order to attract the Sphinx moth to pollinate them. The blooms are widely used to make the trademark Hawaiian leis. Plumeria do best in hot and dry locations in full sun, but will grow in lightly shaded areas. They adapt to a variety of soil types, but will not tolerate cold, wet soils. They are moderate water users saturate soil mass thoroughly, and then allow to dry somewhat before the next irrigation.
