~ Orchids ~
|
The orchid family is probably the largest in the plant kingdom, with almost 800 genera and more than 17,000 species and hybrids. Most orchids are epiphytes, growing in trees in their native lands; tropical and subtropical jungles. Their nourishment is derived from air, rain and whatever decaying vegetable matter their root systems can trap. Terrestrial species, including most native north american orchids, most often occur in wooded areas where loose, moist humus-rich soil is available. on some occaisons they will grow in open meadows. Water requirements vary with each species. For the most epiphytic orchids, ground bark, bark chips and ready-made orchid mixes are the best potting media. Water these plants thoroughly then allow the media to dry out and become lightweight. terrestrial orchids require constant moisture. Because of their elegant forms and multitude of color variations, orchids make beautiful focal points in the home. Inside, all orchids prefer bright indirect light. Outdoors, in the summer, place them in bright shade. Epidendrons, however, can grow in partial shade to full sun. The Plant Stand carries, subject to seasonal availability, the following varities: epiphytic- cymbidiums, epidendrons and paphiopedilums. epiphytic- cattleyas, dendrobiums, oncidiums, phalaenopsis and a selection of hybrids. |
