~ Bromeliads ~
|
This genus is composed of more than 2,000 species, with the Pineapple being the best known. Most are tropical rainforest natives and are epiphytic, although a few are terrestrial. They grow on trees and rocks with their roots anchoring them. The terrestrial species grow in the leaf mold on the jungle floor. Their main source of water is what is collected in their cupped leaf bases and retained between rains. Leaves may be handsomely marked and the flowers gain additional beauty from the colorful, often long-lasting, bracts. For this reason, they are considered chioce houseplants. Indoors, Bromeliads like bright indirect light and high humidity. Outdoors, they grow best in partial to light shade. We normally stock the following varieties: aechmea, guzmania, neoregelia, tillandsia and vriesea. They are available in 4" and 6" singles as well as 8" and 10" combo bowls. |
