~ Bird of Paradise ~

 Strelitzia, common name Bird of Paradise, is a genus comprised of five species of evergreen plants, indigenous to South Africa. It is commonly referred to as the "Crane flower". The two most familiar species are, Strelitzia reginae "Bird of Paradise" and Strelitzia nicolai "Giant Bird of Paradise". They have long-stalked, leathery leaves with individual, extremely showy flowers. S. reginae flowers are orange, blue and white. S. nicolai flowers are larger, but not as colorful. Their blooms are white with a dark blue tongue. The Giant Bird can reach 30 feet tall and as wide. The Orange Bird generally grows to 5 to 6 foot and as wide also. Strelitzias do best in full sun to light shade, in very hot climates. They can dry out a bit between waterings. The plant is ideal for poolside plantings as they produce no litter and can tolerate some splashing from the pool. Our usual availability for S. nicolai is 8", in 3, 7 and 15 gallon sizes. Periodically, 20 gallon pots are available. Normal stock for S. reginae is 3, 5 and 7 gallon. We have limited availability of S. "Mandellas Gold", which is characterized by a striking yellow, rather than orange, flower. Another unusual species, with limited availability, is S. juncea. This Bird has greatly reduced or non-existent foliage.
